I Have a Dream

Delivered on the steps at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. on August 28, 1963

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.
오늘 우리나라의 역사에 있어 가장 위대한 시위의 하나로 역사에 기록될 이 아침에 여러분과 함께 하게 되어 기쁘기 그지없습니다.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
100년전 오늘 우리가 세운 이 상징적인 모습속에 남아있는 한 위대한 미국인이 노예해방 선언에 서명하였습니다.

This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice.
이 기념비적인 선포는 엄청난 불의의 불길속에서 신음하던 수백만의 흑인들에게 위대한 희망의 횃불로 다가왔습니다.

It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.
그들의 포로상태의 기나긴 밤을 끝내는 감격스러운 새벽이 왔던 것입니다.

But one hundred years later, the Negro is still not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.
그러나 백년이 지난 지금 흑인들은 아직도 자유롭지 못합니다. 백년이 지난 지금 흑인들의 삶은 여전히 인종주의의 수갑에 묶여 있고, 차별 정책에 매여있습니다.

One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity.
백년이 지났지만 흑인들은 거대한 물질적 풍요의 대양 한가운데에 있는 외로운 가난의 섬에서 살고 있습니다.

One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land.
백년이 지난 지금에도 흑인들은 여전히 미국 사회의 구석에서 뒤쳐져 있으며, 그 자신이 자기 자신의 나라에서 추방되어 있다는 사실을 발견하고 있습니다.

So we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition.
그러므로 우리는 오늘 이 수치스러운 현실을 변화시키기 위하여 이 자리에 모였습니다.

In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check.
어떤 의미에서는 국가가 우리에게 보증한 수표를 현금으로 바꾸기 위해 왔습니다.

When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.
우리 국가의 개척자들이 장엄한 말로 헌법과 독립 선언문을 썼을 때, 그들은 모든 미국인들이 유산으로 물려 받을 약속어음을 노래하였던 것입니다.

This note was a promise that all men would be guarranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, nad the pursuit of happiness.
이 어음은 모든 사람들, 백인뿐만 아니라 흑인도 양도할 수 없는 삶의 권리와 자유와 행복의 추구를 보증 받았다는 약속이었습니다.

But it is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned.
그런데 유색 인종에 관한한 미국이 이 약속 어음을 갚지 않고 있다는 것은 부인할 수 없는 오늘의 현실입니다.

Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check which has come back marked "insufficient funds."
이 신성한 의무를 존중하는 대신에 미국은 흑인에게 부도 수표를 건내주고 있는데, 그 뒤에는 "불충분한 돈"이라고 쒸여져 있습니다.

But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt.
그러나 우리는 정의 둑이 무너졌다고는 결코 믿지 않습니다.

We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.
우리는 이 나라의 기회라는 금고가 비어 있다고 결코 믿지 않습니다.

So we have come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.
우리는 우리에게 충만한 자유와 확고한 정의를 가져다 줄 현금을 받기 위해서 여기에 온 것입니다.

We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now.
우리는 또한 현재의 절박한 위기를 미국에 일깨우기 위해서 이 신성한 곳에 왔습니다.

This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug
of gradualism.
호화스럽게 이 위기를 냉각시키는데 몰두하거나 점진주의라는 진정제를 먹을 때가 아닙니다.

Now is the time to make real the promises of demosracy.
지금은 진정한 민주주의를 약속할 때입니다.

Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice.
지금은 어둠과 인종 차별의 황폐한 계곡에서 일어나 인종적 정의의 길을 밝힐 때입니다.

Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial
injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.
이제는 우리의 국가를 인종적 불의의 수렁에서부터 형제애의 견고한 반석위로 들어 올려야 할 때입니다.

Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children.
이제는 모든 하나님의 자녀를 위하여 정의를 실현해야 할 때입니다.

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment.
국가가 이런 절박한 시점을 무시하고 지나쳐 버리는 것은 심각한 일이라 하겠습니다.

This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality.
흑인들의 정당한 불만으로 가득찬 이 무더운 여름날은 자유와 평등으로 가득찬 상쾌한 가을이 있기 전까지는 지나가지 않을 것입니다.

1963 is not an end, but a beginning.
1963년은 끝이 아니라 시작입니다.

Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will
have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual.
흑인들이 격앙된 마음을 진정시키고 이제 만족하기를 바라는 사람들도 이 국가가 여느 때와 같은 정책을 다시 실시하게 된다면 중대한 자각을 하게 될 것입니다.



There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights.
흑인들이 자신들의 공민권을 인정받을 때까지는 미국에는 어떤 안정도 평온도 가질 수 없을 것입니다.

The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.
정의의 밝은 날이 오기까지는 격렬한 폭동은 우리국가의 근본을 뒤흔들 것입니다.

But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice.
그러나 나는 정의의 궁전으로 가는 감격스러운 입구에 서있는 여러분에게 말씀드여야 할 것이 있습니다.

In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds.
우리의 정당한 지위를 찾는 과정에서 우리가 잘못된 행동을 해서는 안된다는 것입니다.

Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.
비통과 증오의 잔을 마셔서 자유를 위한 우리의 갈증을 해소시키려 해서는 안된다는 것입니다.

We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline.
우리는 언제나 높은 수준의 엄숙함과 예절로써 우리의 투쟁을 수행해야 합니다.

We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence.
우리는 물리적 폭력으로 타락시키고 말 시위를 허용해서는 안됩니다.

Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.
우리는 정신적 힘으로써 엄청난 물리적 힘에 맞서 싸우며 계속하여 일어나야 합니다.

The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is inextricably tied up with our destiny.
우리 흑인 공동체의 엄청난 새로운 투쟁성으로 말미암아 모든 백인에 대한 불신으로 우리가 이끌려서는 안됩니다. 왜냐하면 오늘 여기에 참석함으로써 입증하고 있듯이 우리의 많은 백인 형제들은 그들의 운명이 우리의 운명과 묶여져 있기 때문입니다.



They have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.
그들의 자유 또한 우리의 자유와 함께 풀 수 없으리만큼 묶여져 제한받고 있다는 것을 깨닫고 있기 때문입니다.

We cannot walk alone.
우리는 홀로 갈 수 없습니다.

And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead.

We cannot turn back.
우리는 뒤로 물러설 수 없습니다.

There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?"
공민권을 쟁취하기 위해 싸우는 열성가에게 "당신은 언제 만족하실 겁니까?"라고 묻는 사람들이 있습니다.

We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality.
흑인들이 무자비한 정책에서 비롯되는 엄청난 참사의 희생자가 되는 한 우리는 결코 만족할 수 없습니다.

We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities.
여행에서 지친 우리의 몸이 고속도로 주변의 모텔과 시내의 호텔에 숙박도 할 수 없는 한 우리는 결코 만족할 수 없습니다.

We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one.
흑인들이 작은 빈민촌에서 더 큰 빈민촌으로 밖에 돌아다닐 수 없는 한 우리는 결코 만족할 수 없습니다.

We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their selfhood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating "for whites only".
우리의 어린이들이 "백인전용"이라고 내세운 간판에 의해 그들의 자아가 상처받고 그들의 존엄성을 잃어버리는 한 우리는 결코 만족할 수 없습니다.

We can never be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in
New York believes he has nothing for which to vote.
미시시피에 사는 흑인들이 선거할 수 없으며, 뉴욕에 사는 흑인들이 자신들은 선거핳 수 없다고 생각하고 있는 한 우리는 만족할 수 없습니다.
No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.

I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations.

Some of you have come fresh from narrow cells.

Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality.

You have been the veterans of creative suffering.
여러분은 창조적인 고통을 겪은 선구자들입니다.

Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.
부당한 고통은 구원적 성격을 띤다는 믿음을 지니고 계속 행동하십시오.

Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed.
이 현실이 변화될 수 있고, 변화될 것임을 인식하고, 미시시피로 돌아가고, 알라바마로 돌아가고, 남 케롤라이나로 돌아가고, 죠지아로 돌아가고, 루지아나로 돌아가고, 남부도시의 빈민가로 돌아갑시다.

Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.
절망의 골짜기에서 빈둥거리지 맙시다.

I say to you today, my friends, that even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow. I still have a dream.
나의 친구되는 여러분들에게 말씀드리고자 하는 것은, 우리가 현재나 미래에 어려움을 겪어야만 할지라도 나는 꿈을 여전히 지니고 있다는 것입니다.

It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
그것은 미국의 꿈과 깊이 연결되어 있는 꿈입니다.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."
나는 언젠가는 이 나라가 각성하여 우리가 만든 "모든 인간은 평등하게 창조되었다는 것을 자명한 진리로 우리는 받아들이고 있습니다."라는 법안의 진정한 의미를 살릴 수 있을 것이라는 꿈이 있습니다.

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.
나는 언젠가는 피에 물든 죠지아의 언덕에서 옛적 노예의 아들과 옛적 노예 소유주의 아들들이 형제애에 넘치는 밥상에 함께 앉을 수 있을 것이라는 꿈을 지니고 있습니다.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
나는 언젠가는 억압과 불의의 열기로 시달리고 있는 미시시피주 마저도 정의와 자유의 오아시스로 변모할 것이라는 꿈을 지니고 있습니다.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
나는 언젠가는 나의 네 명의 어린 자녀들이 그들의 피부 색깔에 의해 판단 받지 않고 그들의 인격에 따라 판단 받을 나라에서 살게 될 것이라는 꿈을 지니고 있습니다.

I have a dream today!
나는 오늘 꿈을 지니고 있습니다!

I have a dream that one day, in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification : one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.
나는 언젠가는 간섭과 약속파기를 밥먹듯이 입에 담고 다니는 알라바마의 악독한 인종 차별주의자들과 주지사를 깨부수고, 어린 흑인 소년 소녀들이 같은 형제 자매인 어린 백인 소년 소녀들과 손을 잡을 수 있을 것이라는 꿈을 지니고 있습니다.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.
나는 언젠가는 모든 골짜기가 높아지고, 모든 산과 언덕이 낮아지며, 거칠은 땅이 평평해지며, 구부러진 땅이 펴지며, 주의 영광이 드러나 모든 사람들이 주의 영광을 함께 보게 될 것이라는 꿈을 지니고 있습니다.

This is our hope.
이것이 우리의 소망입니다.

This is the faith I will go back to the South.
이것이 내가 남부로 되돌아 갈 때 가져 갈 믿음입니다.

With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope.
이 믿음을 지닐 때 우리는 희망의 돌멩이가 묻혀 있는 절망의 산을 개척할 수 있을 것입니다.

With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.
이 믿음을 지닐 때 우리는 우리 나라의 소란한 불협화음을 아름다운 형제애의 심포니로 바꿀 수 있을 것입니다.

With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.
이 믿음을 지닐 때 우리가 언젠가는 자유 하리라는 것을 알고, 함께 일하고, 함께 기도하며, 함께 투쟁하며, 함께 감옥에 가며, 함께 자유를 옹호할 수 있을 것입니다.

This will be the day, this will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring!"
이날은 모든 하나님의 자녀들이 새롭게 노래를 부를 수 있을 것입니다. "우리의 조국은 당신의 것입니다. 자유의 아름다운 땅, 나 당신에게 노래합니다. 우리의 조상들이 죽어간 땅, 청교도의 자부심으로 가득 찬 땅, 모든 산골마다 자유의 종소리를 울리게 하십시오!"

And if America is to be a great nation this must become true.

And so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.
이제 뉴햄프셔의 커다란 산꼭대기에서 자유의 종소리가 울려 퍼지게 합시다.


Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.
뉴욕의 거대한 산에서 자유의 종소리가 울려 퍼지게 합시다.

Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania.
펜실바니아주의 높은 알레게니스 산맥에서 자유의 종소리가 울려 퍼지게 합시다.

Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado.

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous peaks of California.

But not only that.

Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.

Let freedom ring from every hill and every molehill of Mississippi. from every mountainside, let freedom ring!

And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"
